API 1: request explorer

An API explorer: a method, an address, headers and a JSON body, then the answer with its status in words, time and size and the body as a tree; a broken body is caught before sending, with history and Copy as cURL.

State

The normal view. Pick a state to see what the block shows while it loads, is empty or fails.

Open in v0 (opens in a new tab)

Installation

$ pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @ballmac/api-1

Usage

Example: api-1-demo.tsx
"use client"

import { Api1 } from "@/components/ballmac/blocks/api-1/api-1"

export default function Api1Demo() {
  return <Api1 />
}

States

Pass state and the block does the rest: skeletons that match its layout, a clear empty message, an error you can retry, and announcements for screen readers.

  • Loading

    A skeleton request bar and panel under the real heading, announced as loading. While a request is in flight the response panel shows a skeleton and the page is marked busy.

    state="loading"
  • Could not load

    An alert with Try again (onRetry). A request that gets no answer shows 'No response' with the reason in the response panel.

    state="error"

Quality scorecard

7/7

Every applicable check passes

Measured in Chromium 153.0.8010.12 on October 19, 2026, on version 1.0.0, across 5 examples.

How we measure
  • Passed: Accessibility scan

    No serious or critical issues in light and dark, on a phone and a desktop (axe-core 4.13.0, WCAG 2.1 AA and best-practice rules).

  • Passed: Small screens

    No sideways scrolling at 360, 390 or 1280 px wide.

  • Passed: Reduced motion

    Every endless animation stops when the visitor asks for less motion.

  • Not applicable: Right to left

    Not mirrored by design: Addresses, headers, bodies and responses are code and stay left to right inside by design.

  • Passed: Clean console

    No console errors or React hydration errors while loading.

  • Passed: Keyboard

    49 tab stops, each showing a visible change when it takes focus. 3 documented keys.

  • Passed: Loading, empty and error

    Ships loading, error states, each with an example.

  • Passed: Automated tests

    Covered by api-1.test.tsx.

  • For information: Footprint

    5.5 KB of source (gzip) in 1 file. Installs lucide-react.

Automated checks find a subset of problems and do not replace testing with a screen reader and a keyboard in your own app. What they miss.

Dependencies

Use with AI

An API explorer. <Api1 title defaultRequest={{ method: 'POST', url, headers: [{ id, key, value }], body }} defaultResponse onSend={(request) => Promise<{ status, statusText, ms, headers, body }>} />. Send is disabled while the address is not a full https URL or a body is not valid JSON, and says why. Every send is added to a history of six. Copy as cURL builds the command from the current request. Without onSend a built-in demo API for /v1/users answers (401 without an Authorization header, 200, 201, 404, 422). With the shadcn MCP server set up (guide), ask your agent:

Add the Ballmac UI API 1: request explorer (@ballmac/api-1) to this project with the shadcn MCP, then use it where it fits.

Use it for

  • API documentation with a try-it panel
  • A developer dashboard where customers test their keys

Not for

  • Showing one endpoint's reference (use api-endpoint)
  • Watching live traffic (use log-stream)
