Flags 1: feature flags manager

A feature flags manager: a switch per environment, a production rollout slider, flags fully on for months marked ready to remove, a confirmation before changing production, and failed saves undone with the reason.

State

The normal view. Pick a state to see what the block shows while it loads, is empty or fails.

Open in v0 (opens in a new tab)

Installation

$ pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @ballmac/flags-1

Usage

Example: flags-1-demo.tsx
"use client"

import { Flags1 } from "@/components/ballmac/blocks/flags-1/flags-1"

export default function Flags1Demo() {
  return <Flags1 onChange={() => new Promise((r) => setTimeout(r, 500))} />
}

States

Pass state and the block does the rest: skeletons that match its layout, a clear empty message, an error you can retry, and announcements for screen readers.

  • Loading

    Skeleton rows under the real heading, announced as loading.

    state="loading"
  • No flags yet

    Explains what a flag is; emptyState sets the copy and can add a button. A search with no match says so with Clear filters.

    state="empty" (or flags={[]})
  • Could not load

    An alert saying nothing was changed, with Try again (onRetry). A change that fails to save is undone with its message under the flag.

    state="error"

Quality scorecard

8/8

Every applicable check passes

Measured in Chromium 153.0.8010.12 on October 19, 2026, on version 1.0.0, across 5 examples.

How we measure
  • Passed: Accessibility scan

    No serious or critical issues in light and dark, on a phone and a desktop (axe-core 4.13.0, WCAG 2.1 AA and best-practice rules).

  • Passed: Small screens

    No sideways scrolling at 360, 390 or 1280 px wide.

  • Passed: Reduced motion

    Every endless animation stops when the visitor asks for less motion.

  • Passed: Right to left

    Mirrors correctly in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu layouts (2% of elements off the mirror, limit 15%).

  • Passed: Clean console

    No console errors or React hydration errors while loading.

  • Passed: Keyboard

    58 tab stops, each showing a visible change when it takes focus. 3 documented keys.

  • Passed: Loading, empty and error

    Ships loading, empty, error states, each with an example.

  • Passed: Automated tests

    Covered by flags-1.test.tsx.

  • For information: Footprint

    5.0 KB of source (gzip) in 1 file. Installs lucide-react.

Automated checks find a subset of problems and do not replace testing with a screen reader and a keyboard in your own app. What they miss.

Dependencies

Use with AI

A feature flags manager. <Flags1 flags={[{ id, key: 'checkout-v2', description, enabled: { dev, staging, production }, rollout: 0..100, rules: 'Staff, and the Beta group', owner, changedDays }]} onChange={(flag) => Promise} />. A flag is 'Ready to remove' when it is on in production at 100% and unchanged for 90 days or more. Changing Production asks first and says who it affects; other environments change at once. Reject onChange and the flag goes back with the message. Rollout moves in steps of 5 and needs Save. With the shadcn MCP server set up (guide), ask your agent:

Add the Ballmac UI Flags 1: feature flags manager (@ballmac/flags-1) to this project with the shadcn MCP, then use it where it fits.

Use it for

  • An internal tool for releasing features gradually
  • A settings area of a developer product with flags or toggles per environment

Not for

  • A user's own preference switches (use settings-1)
