Roster 1: weekly shift planner

A weekly shift roster: a row per person and a column per day, shifts you set, change or mark as time off, hours per person with overtime and rest flags, a coverage row against what each day needs, weeks to page through and a publish step.

State

The normal view. Pick a state to see what the block shows while it loads, is empty or fails.

Open in v0 (opens in a new tab)

Installation

$ pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @ballmac/roster-1

Usage

Example: roster-1-demo.tsx
"use client"

import { Roster1 } from "@/components/ballmac/blocks/roster-1/roster-1"

export default function Roster1Demo() {
  return <Roster1 onPublish={() => new Promise((r) => setTimeout(r, 700))} />
}

States

Pass state and the block does the rest: skeletons that match its layout, a clear empty message, an error you can retry, and announcements for screen readers.

  • Loading

    A skeleton grid under the real heading, announced as loading.

    state="loading"
  • No staff

    Says to add the people who work here; emptyState sets the copy and can add a button.

    state="empty" (or staff={[]})
  • Could not load

    An alert saying nothing was changed, with Try again (onRetry). A publish that fails says the week is still a draft, in place under the grid.

    state="error"

Quality scorecard

8/8

Every applicable check passes

Measured in Chromium 153.0.8010.12 on October 19, 2026, on version 1.0.0, across 5 examples.

How we measure
  • Passed: Accessibility scan

    No serious or critical issues in light and dark, on a phone and a desktop (axe-core 4.13.0, WCAG 2.1 AA and best-practice rules).

  • Passed: Small screens

    No sideways scrolling at 360, 390 or 1280 px wide.

  • Passed: Reduced motion

    Every endless animation stops when the visitor asks for less motion.

  • Passed: Right to left

    Mirrors correctly in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu layouts (0% of elements off the mirror, limit 15%).

  • Passed: Clean console

    No console errors or React hydration errors while loading.

  • Passed: Keyboard

    91 tab stops, each showing a visible change when it takes focus. 3 documented keys.

  • Passed: Loading, empty and error

    Ships loading, empty, error states, each with an example.

  • Passed: Automated tests

    Covered by roster-1.test.tsx.

  • For information: Footprint

    6.3 KB of source (gzip) in 1 file. Installs lucide-react.

Automated checks find a subset of problems and do not replace testing with a screen reader and a keyboard in your own app. What they miss.

A shift roster. <Roster1 staff={[{ id, name, role, maxHours }]} positions={[{ id, label, tone }]} shifts={{ 'p1|2026-10-12': { start: '07:00', end: '15:00', position: 'bar' } | { off: true } }} weekStart='2026-10-12' /* a Monday */ required={[3,3,3,4,4,5,4]} minRest={11} locale onChange={(key, shift | null) => ...} onPublish={(weekStart) => Promise} />. Hours, overtime against each maxHours, rest between one day's end and the next day's start (under minRest is flagged) and coverage against required are worked out from the shifts. Press a cell to add, edit or remove a shift or mark time off. Reject onPublish to keep the week a draft with the reason. With the shadcn MCP server set up (guide), ask your agent:
